Staff Professional Learning: ‘Exploring Our Scattered Senses’

I am proud that the College values staff spiritual formation, and I am inspired to take my learnings into my personal and professional life.

I was extremely fortunate to be given the opportunity to participate in a silent retreat at Santa Casa, Queenscliff from from 15 – 17 June.

We explored the notion that silence and solitude increase our availability to God. We learnt how to listen to the parts of ourselves that are not oriented to ideas or words.

The days were structured around silent meal times and personal reflection, and structured gatherings where we could talk (!) and reflected upon scripture and the insights, reflections and noticings that arose throughout our periods of contemplation.

This experience has been profound. I am proud that the College values staff spiritual formation, and I am inspired to take my learnings into my personal and professional life. The experience has taught me that when we slow down and engage all of our senses, we truly see the beauty and mystery of God’s creation.

“Our God is not distant or abstract…it is a presence intimately involved in our lives. By embracing a multi-sensory faith, we not only draw closer to God but also open ourselves to the abundant beauty and grace God has woven into the fabric of creation.”

Reflection- Gathering Our Scattered Senses (Taizé Service to conclude the retreat)

We gather our sight -

What we have seen, what we cannot unsee -

And ask to see again with love.

Pause

We gather our hearing -

The noise, the words, the overload -

And ask to hear what is true.

Pause

We gather our breath -

What has been held tight or rushed -

And receive the Spirit of life.

Pause

We gather our hearts -

What has been guarded, hurt, or scattered -

And rest in love that holds us.

Pause

We gather our hands -

What we cling to, what we carry -

And learn the freedom of letting go.

Pause

We are gathered in Christ -

Sight, hearing, breath, heart, and body -

Into one love.
